Roohie sat alone in her room , frantically scribbling onto her diary . Penning down her thoughts , her fears , snippets of her life was a means of coping up for poor little Roohie .

“Dear Diary ,

I heard Daddy shouting at Mamma yesterday . I think he does not like me anymore .He said I was his half daughter . He also talked about surrogacy . What is surrogacy ? ” , she wrote wiping away tears running down her cherubic cheeks . ” When I was alone at home yesterday I tried to find more about surrogacy . I couldn’t understand anything diary . I think I din’t come from Mamma’s tummy . Daddy hates me , Mamma is sad because of me . I am alone , I miss Daddy ! You are my only friend now . Jenny aunty is here ,they are all busy .Roohie is alone . Going to sleep now.

Love,

Roohie ”

Locking the hurt Roohie in some desolated corner of her heart and confronting adversities with a fragile shield of never dimming smile was a quality that came naturally to her , which clearly showed that she was her Daddy’s daughter . But there were times when the shield wasn’t strong enough.

Even though each member of Dutta household were engaged in a battle of their own , they never let it show .

The next evening as Tara spotted Roohie peeping from her door ,she called out , “Oh Roohie beta, ato taratari(So early)! Come come come, I’ve made some pasta for you! Chalo let’s have it together okay ?”

Tara never had the slightest comprehension that Roohie had already mastered the art of .

“Chalo chaloooo!! I’m hungry mamma!” she shouted . Shekhar came down and sat beside her at the table . Roohie’s little fingers clutched the sides of her skirt . “So, little Miss Dutta how was your school today ?” a nonchalant Shekhar asked Roohie.

“Papa! I came first in drawing competition !” she replied , a sudden happiness flashing across her face . “Ahan ! that’s my girl! Good Good. Kalke(tomorrow) I’ll take you to Uncle’s Kitchen okay ? ” Shekhar asked while he gently patted his daughter .He could see traces of himself and Tara in her but chose to be blind . But he could never forgive Tara.

“Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!” Roohie was jumping around , her fears lay forgotten for the day.

Roohie had very few friends in school. And there was something else she was hiding from her parents . Something she never mentioned about him in her diary either . One of those days when she was playing outside ” Ahuja Uncle ” came into her life . His charm had won her over . He was everything her Daddy wasn’t . She confided in him and trusted him.

Roohie was back after her outing with Daddy and her spirits seemed to be elevated . When Tara went in to check on her , she saw a teddy bear lying on her bed . Since it wasn’t one of Roohie’s she wanted to know where it came from . When she turned around she saw her daughter standing at the corner of her room her eyes clearly avoiding Tara’s.

……..something which she herself did when there were truths hidden .

Chapter 7

Do check out the previous chapter – Chapter 6 by Gitanjali !

Jennifer walked towards the lake shore, with the camera, her most faithful companion,
dangling down her left shoulder. She sat down at her favourite place on the beach and tried to pushed the bitter sweet memories to the back of her mind as she focussed her camera. She loved photography . Her DSLR, a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, meant more than anything else in the world to Jennifer. Yet another passion of hers was travelling. She loved going places and meeting people, it also let her capture countless beautiful moments in her camera to last a lifetime.

She was once featured as one of the top photographers at the National Geographic channel for capturing the beauty of the Himalayas. But all that was past. Despite being a well-known face in the blogger community, she was missing in action since quite some time. The sun-rise she captured from the peak of Mount K2 was her best shot till date. It easily qualified as a postcard perfect picture. Like each of the mere mortals, she had her own share of ups and downs. Her past haunted her .

Jennifer had lost both her parents in a car accident as a child and there after was raised by her grandparents. They never let her miss her parents and she had an almost perfect happy life. She loved photography ever since she was a child, thanks to her Grandfather who himself was a camera freak. Inspite of being amazingly beautiful, Jennifre always preferred to be behind the lens. Her love for photography continued to grow with her.And once her Grandfather bought her a DSLR,there was no looking back. Her joy knew no bounds as she learnt the nuances of photography soon enough.

A young college girl studying Mass Media and Communications, she was one of the best students in her choice of profession. Full of energy and craving adventure, she was always on the move

“Grandpa!!!!!! I’m off to Srinagar for the National Geographic photography challenge contest!!” shouted a young Jennifer.

“Why child? You just returned a week ago from Udaipur na? Have some rest at home ?” replied her grandfather.

An elderly choked voice comes from behind, “Oh you, just leave my daughter alone! Let her live to the fullest! Do you even know what National Geographic channel is? Its not like any of those lame channels you keep watching all day!”, her grand mother said, while she cooked pancakes for breakfast.

As usual, her Grandfather gave in, not before he gave her his fair share of advises and warning. Jennifer left for Delhi for the grooming camp.

It was there that she met Darius.A handsome guy full of enthusiasm and amazingly sportive nature.

Jenny first spotted him in the reception of the hotel while she was waiting to check in. Leaning carelessly on the wall, cleaning his 50mm lens with a cloth. Jennifer felt butterflies in her stomach as she saw him. The sun shining on his Aviator sunglasses left a beautiful glaze on his face. Though she fell for him the moment she saw him,Jenny was reluctant to approach him. She was one of those girls who would never dare to open a conversation with anyone.

But Jennifer was lucky enough,as Darius approached her and said ,” Hello, beautiful lady! You seem to be confused much! Your face tells it. May I help?”

Jennifer tried to be cool,”Ah,Yes sure, it would be great .Thank You! I am Jennifer”. She extended her hands.”Darius” ,he introduced himself as he shook her hands.

“Nice meeting you,Darius!”

“Same here Jennifer. I like your name.”

“Ah thank you so much”. she felt her heart flutter with joy.

Darius was one of the groomers and he introduced her to the rest of the team.

After the orientation where the officials explained the rules for the competition commencing the next day, the contestants were instructed to relax in the rooms alloted to them.

That evening Darius reached Jennifer’s room and knocked,”May I come in?”.
“Oh yes” Jennifer replied.

They spent the whole night talking about this and that. Darius shared incidents from his life and Jennifer felt quite at ease in his company.
As the conversation wandered to Darius’s profession, he skillfully avoided the topic and just hinted that he worked for the government. Jenny noticed his reluctance to talk about his job, but let it go.

A week later, the contestants left to hilly areas of Srinagar for a photo shoot. All the young photographers were quite thrilled at the prospect. The team divided into smaller groups and each of them set of into different directions, clicking to their heart’s content as they climbed the mountains and crossed beautiful valleys.

Ranging from peaks of the mighty mountains to the crossings of the scenic valleys, Srinagar is a photographer’s paradise. All the contestants were busy clicking , wishing to out do others.

The photo shoot was to last four days. After the shoots on the third day, Jennifer not at all pleased with her shots. Darius noticed the uneasy feeling on her face and asked, “Hey Jennifer, what’s the issue?”. Jennifer showed him the snaps she had taken since the last three days, and exclaimed, “You know Darius, something is missing in all these pictures. A picture should have a soul, and none of them looks alive enough. Do you feel anything at all when you look at them? ”

Darius replied calmly,”Oh Jenny, relax. You might not be the best photographer in the world. But you have come this far, isn’t that enough? With experience and time, you are going to be better” .

Jennifer shrugged impatiently, “I need to win this contest, okay? If a picture lacks life it fails to be a piece of memory! I know I can do better.I need to concentrate, now if you could leave me alone, please!”.

Darius left her and retired to his bedroom. Jennifer felt bad later but she never liked to be anything lesser than the best.

On the fourth day, she planned to take a shot of the rising sun basking in the glory of thousand shades of crimson. She set of in the early morning to the hill side. Darius who was at the top of the hill clicking pictures spotted Jennifer in his viewfinder. He watched her for a moment and did not like what he saw. Jenny was heading towards the steep slope of the hill.It was dangerous.

“Jennifer don’t go there! it’s steep!” he shouted on the top of his voice. The wind was strong, and she couldn’t hear him.

Darius, packed the camera bag and rushed towards Jennifer.

Jennifer was oblivious to her surroundings as she was busy clicking her shots and checking, getting more frustrated when she failed to get her perfect shot. She went a step ahead on the slippery mountain edge and exclaimed. “Yeah, this is perfect!” No sooner than she clicked the amazing shot she was waiting for, her feet slipped and she fell. Darius just reached in time to catch her firmly by the arms.

Jennifer was taken aback, and, she said to Darius, “Hold on tight.I don’t wanna die so soon,Darius!”.

Darius replied,” As if I’m gonna let you die, pretty lady!”.

In spite of the danger they were in, Jennifer smiled.

Chapter 8

Read the previous Chapter 7 by Depanjan

After some efforts, Darius pulled Jenny up. Both of them had minor injuries and Jenny had sprained her leg.

As they both stood by the cliff contemplating the danger they were in, Jennifer sheepishly said.

“You could have died ,trying to save me”

“I could have never lived if had I failed to save you “,Darius looked deep into her eyes.

And there started a whirlwind romance.

After the camp wrapped up,Jenny followed Darius to Delhi. She convinced her Grandfather to let her join a short term course there.

They saw each other frequently and Jenny soon realised that she could never live without Darius.

And then on one fine day darius popped the question “Jennifer, will you marry me?”

Jenny didn’t think twice before saying yes.

Darius was not Christian, nor did she know much about his family background. But Jennifer, went ahead without any second thoughts and they got married in a small Church in Delhi.

One month passed, and one day Darius left for a business trip to never return. She waited for a whole week, but he did not turn up. His phone was switched off. She did not know whom to contact and what to do.
She finally went to the police station, but other than her word for it, no one else knew about his whereabouts. She contacted the National Geographic channel only to know that he was a freelance photographer who had worked with them once in a while. The address that they had turned out to be an old one. Jennifer was both mentally and emotionally crushed. Where did Darius go? Was he in danger? Was he deceiving her?

A week later, she received a courier. It was Darius’s camera. Her spirits lifted and she tore open the letter that came with it. Written on the note was,

“My love,

I cannot disclose anything now. But I had always loved you.
When I married you, I wanted to be with you for ever, but I am forced to leave now.
You will always be in my heart, I had never intended to hurt you”.

Jennifer started crying, and her tears knew no bounds. She had nowhere to go,but back to Cochin and explain everything to her grandfather. She did not have the strength to remain in Delhi without Darius.

Next day, she took the flight to Cochin. On reaching home she explained everything to her grandfather.

But when her grandfather heard the story, he was blind with fury.
“We gave you all the love in this world and this is what you do in return. You go and marry a stranger without even informing us? And look what a fool you made yourself into..ran away at the first chance, didn’t he..”
Jennifer tried to explain “But , But Grandpa,he loved me so much.! He still loves me!”

“Shut up. I want no explanations. You have ruined the honor of our family. Tomorrow people will laugh at me and say that see this is the man whose Granddaughter was a slut. I cannot bear this anymore. Go away, Jennifer. If you did not think it important enough to inform us before making the biggest decision of your life, go away”. Her grandma, came running and, started taking Jennifer’s side, but alas, all the requests fell on deaf ears. Her grandfather was absolutely adamant.
Jennifer started to pack her bags. She did not know where to go now. She felt as if she lost everything. She was broken .She has lost her family, her husband was missing. She lost everything she had in the blink of an eye.
But, she didn’t lose hope. She wanted to live a new life.
Jennifer left for Mumbai where she stayed with her friends for a few time and worked there as an intern for Balaji Telefilms Pvt Ltd, a big media agency.
Years passed by, she missed her grandfather, but never bothered to stay in touch with him. The hurt, dejection, loneliness and feeling of being outcast from her own community was all afresh in the mind even after four years of the tragic incident. One fine day, when she was in the office, she received a call on her phone. It was a lawyer who informed her of her grandfather’s illness and that he wanted to meet her one last time.

Jenny decided to come back, even if it was only for a while.

She now set of to fix the aperture and ISO shutter speed of her camera to take another sunset shot. That was when her phone rang. She nervously glanced at the display, an unknown number. Her pulse quickened and she broke into a cold sweat.A relief spread onto her as she heard the emotionless voice of a female at the other end.The call was not from the person she had dreaded but it was from a representative of BBC International, one of the best media agencies in the world. They had called Jennifer for the post of senior photographer because they had found her past application for the post. She smiled in spite of herself.

What an irony! She thought.
But as she watched the sun dive back into the inky lake, she knew that she cannot leave the threads loose. She had to go back for the closure. Else she would keep running away from her life all her life.

Here, the doorbell rang and Tara was overwhelmed to see Roohie at the door. Same happened with Roohie. Usually the maid opened the door, she had always wanted to see her Mom at the door when she returned home. But today, she was happy because the door was open, and that too “maa” was opening it, and then she hugged Tara tightly. Suddenly the phone rang, and Tara got a call, saying, that she had to take an interview of a lady who would be appointed as the Media strategist and senior photographer. Tara agreed, because she was used to taking interviews and she was efficient at it. If she weren’t in media, she would have been in some HR company, recruiting people all over and working efficiently. That day, Shekhar was tired, and came home a bit late. Here Tara and Roohie were watching Scooby-Doo, Roohie’s favourite cartoon. She loved watching it. But sadly at the day-care whenever she wanted to watch Scooby-Doo, the caretakers used to reject her request and forcibly showed other cartoons which she disliked. After sending Roohie to bed, Tara opened her laptop to check the emails. Tomorrow was a busy day, with three important meetings and an interview lined up. When Tara retired to bed, it was 12 am. Shekhar still had not reached home. But when he was into some serious work he usually wandered around for inspiration. He had his own key to the house ,so Tara was not concerned. And why would she be?

Next day morning, as usual, Roohie went to school, Tara went to her office,to accomplish her hectic tasks and Shekhar left for Uncle’s Kitchen, to kill his hunger, and to let his creative juices flow out from the mind.

Tara was supposed to take interview of a person,as mentioned. Now, Jennifer landed early morning at the CSIA International, Mumbai. She called up an old friend, to make arrangements. The friend agreed and then she checked in at the specified hotel. After that, she left for the BBC office, all dressed up in formals. She reached the office, and asked the receptionist, “I’m Jennifer. Where should I go for the interview?”. “Right most room on the second floor ma’am”, replied the receptionist. So, Jennifer reached to the room and, asked,”May I come in, ma’am?”. The interviewer was no one else except Tara Dutta. Tara replied, “Yes, Please take a seat”. Jenni replies,”Thank you ma’am.”. And, the interview started. Tara asked her a few questions which Jennifer was able to answer perfectly. She somewhat saw her own reflection in the young girl, with high aspirations and ambitions. And, which triggered her, to recruit her and to give her the job. Finally, as the interview ended, Tara said ” Jennifer, you’re an amazing lady, with good skills and knowledge. BBC is proud to recruit you as the new Media strategist.Get to work from tomorrow itself, okay!”. Jennifer was amazed and replied,”Thank you so much ma’am for the opportunity!”

And, after that, while Jennifer left, Tara got a phone call…..

The night!

Posted: September 5, 2014 in Uncategorized

That was a very normal day. And, incidentally I had an abnormal wish. I wished to eat something extravagant that evening. Because we all know how engineering hostel food is, and though Maggi is the national food for us, yet we students always do wish to have something better.

So, after all my college lectures, Laboratories, assignment writing and other things, I finally found myself free at 8.30pm in the evening. As I’m in a remotely connected area, transportation stops around 6:30 or 7. And the railway station was, about 2.5kms. So, I didn’t have any other option and so I thought of walking away the distance.

I reached the station around an hour later and I got my return ticket. And then I left for Howrah. And Howrah, because I knew there was this new KFC Pizza Hut launched there. But, never in my worst nightmares I would think that my journey would be so disastrous.

So, I boarded the Howrah local around 10. It was eerily silent and I was the only person boarding my coach. I was, as usual, on my headphones and reading my ebook. I saw a couple boarded the train at a specific station. Then, for some time they were somewhat fighting with each other and then both, jumped down the running train. I was taken aback, but as I was on my headphones, I couldn’t hear any part of their conversation. So, I went on the footboard to see whether they are fine or not. But as I couldn’t see their bodies, I couldn’t pull the chain.

Now, as I was trying to return back to my seat, I felt as if something had a grip on my feet. Something like a hand. I was unable to move my feet and incidentally it started to drag me. I was sweating but I couldn’t help myself. And, unluckily I fell down the train only to see myself, in a headless state, walking around the railway lines, as equivalent to a Skandhakata ( headless ghost) in West Bengal. I realized I had turned into one. Walking around the railway lines, with a headless body.

And suddenly, I woke up at my seat, with my headphones on. Then I was approaching a station. As it entered the station, I opened my eyes only to see, the same couple whom I saw in my dream were standing at the station to board the train. I got down the train instantly at the station and, waited for the next train to come. And I saw from a distance, the couple got into the train which I deliberately missed.

I heard a loud scream after a few seconds the train left. I realized, it was someone and not me, who was supposed to, die maybe.

And then the next train came within 15 minutes, and luckily I had the courage to board it because it had some people inspite of being 10:45 pm.
